Acceptance of Terms

By accessing, browsing, or using the WhoisJSON website (whoisjson.com), API, or any related services (collectively, the "Service"), you acknowledge that you have read, understood, and agree to be bound by these Terms of Service ("Terms") and our Privacy Policy.

If you are entering into these Terms on behalf of a company, organization, or other legal entity, you represent and warrant that you have the authority to bind such entity to these Terms.

If you do not agree with any part of these Terms, you must immediately stop using the Service and close your account.
2

Account Registration & Security

To access the WhoisJSON API, you must create an account. By registering, you agree to:

  • Provide accurate, complete, and current information during registration.
  • Maintain and promptly update your account information if it changes.
  • Keep your API key and account credentials confidential and secure.
  • Notify us immediately at support@whoisjson.com if you suspect unauthorized use of your account.
  • Accept full responsibility for all activity that occurs under your account and API key.

You must be at least 18 years of age (or the age of legal majority in your jurisdiction) to create an account and use the Service.

Prohibited Conduct & Duplicate Accounts

Zero-Tolerance Policy — Immediate Account Ban

The following actions are strictly prohibited and will result in the immediate and permanent suspension of all associated accounts, without prior notice, warning, or refund:

3.1 — Duplicate & Multiple Accounts

  • Each individual or entity is permitted only one (1) account. Creating multiple accounts to circumvent free-tier limits, rate limits, or any other usage restrictions is strictly forbidden.
  • Registering additional accounts using different email addresses, aliases, or identities — whether for yourself, your organization, or on behalf of third parties — to gain additional free API requests is a violation of these Terms.
  • We employ automated detection systems (including but not limited to IP analysis, browser fingerprinting, usage-pattern analysis, and payment-method correlation) to identify duplicate accounts.
  • When duplicate accounts are detected, all associated accounts will be permanently banned and any remaining subscription credit will be forfeited without refund.

3.2 — API Abuse & Circumvention

  • Attempting to reverse-engineer, decompile, disassemble, or derive the source code or underlying algorithms of the API.
  • Bypassing, disabling, or interfering with rate limits, authentication mechanisms, or any other security features of the Service.
  • Using automated tools, bots, or scripts to create accounts, generate API keys, or submit requests in a manner designed to evade usage controls.
  • Reselling, sublicensing, redistributing, or sharing your API key or the data obtained through the API, unless explicitly authorized under a commercial agreement.

3.3 — Illegal & Harmful Use

  • Using the Service for any activity that violates applicable local, national, or international laws or regulations.
  • Using the Service to facilitate spam, phishing, harassment, stalking, or any form of malicious activity.
  • Conducting bulk data harvesting or scraping for the purpose of building a competing service or product.
  • Deliberately submitting malformed requests, injecting malicious payloads, or attempting to compromise the integrity, security, or availability of the Service.
  • Performing or facilitating denial-of-service (DoS/DDoS) attacks, load testing, or stress testing against the API without prior written authorization.
4

Acceptable Use Policy

You agree to use the WhoisJSON API only for lawful purposes and in compliance with these Terms. Acceptable use includes, but is not limited to:

  • Integrating WHOIS, DNS, SSL, and availability data into your own applications, tools, or internal dashboards.
  • Performing domain research, cybersecurity analysis, brand protection monitoring, or compliance auditing.
  • Building automated workflows that query the API within the rate limits and quotas of your subscription plan.
  • Displaying API data within your products, provided you attribute the source to WhoisJSON where feasible.

You are solely responsible for ensuring that your use of the API data complies with all applicable data-protection regulations (including GDPR, CCPA, and equivalent frameworks) and ICANN policies regarding the use of WHOIS data.

5

API Usage & Rate Limits

Your use of the API is subject to the request quotas and rate limits associated with your subscription plan. Details of each plan are available on our Pricing page.

  • Free (Basic) plan: 1,000 requests per month, 20 requests per minute, across all endpoints.
  • Paid plans: higher quotas and rate limits as described on the Pricing page. Specific limits depend on the selected tier (Pro, Ultra, Mega).
  • Exceeding your monthly quota will cause subsequent API requests to return an HTTP 429 error until the next billing cycle.
  • Exceeding your rate limit (requests per minute) will temporarily throttle your access. Persistent rate-limit violations may trigger an automatic temporary suspension.
  • API responses are cached for a default duration (currently 3 hours). Paid plans may force a cache refresh at the cost of additional credits, as specified in the plan details.

We reserve the right to modify rate limits, quotas, or caching policies at any time. Material changes will be communicated via email or through an announcement on the website.

6

Intellectual Property

The WhoisJSON brand, logo, website design, API documentation, source code, and all associated intellectual property are the exclusive property of WhoisJSON and are protected by applicable copyright, trademark, and intellectual-property laws.

  • You may not copy, reproduce, modify, distribute, or create derivative works from any part of the Service without prior written consent.
  • The WHOIS, DNS, SSL, and domain-availability data returned by the API originates from public registries, certificate authorities, and DNS resolvers. WhoisJSON does not claim ownership of this raw data but does claim ownership of the structured format, enrichment, and presentation layer.
  • You may not use the WhoisJSON name, logo, or trademarks in any manner that suggests endorsement, partnership, or affiliation without prior written authorization.
7

Billing, Subscriptions & Refunds

7.1 — Subscription & Payment

  • Paid subscriptions are billed monthly in advance. Payment is processed securely through Stripe and PayPal.
  • Prices are listed in USD and EUR. The applicable currency is selected at checkout and applies for the duration of the subscription.
  • Subscriptions automatically renew at the end of each billing period unless cancelled before the renewal date.
  • You may upgrade or downgrade your plan at any time. Upgrades take effect immediately; downgrades take effect at the start of the next billing cycle.
  • All prices are exclusive of applicable taxes (VAT, sales tax, etc.). You are responsible for any taxes imposed by your jurisdiction.

7.2 — Cancellation

  • You may cancel your subscription at any time from your account dashboard.
  • Upon cancellation, your paid plan remains active until the end of the current billing period. After that, your account reverts to the free Basic plan.
  • Unused API requests do not carry over to the next billing period and are not transferable.

7.3 — Refund Policy

As a general rule, payments for subscription services are non-refundable. However, we may, at our sole discretion, issue a partial or full refund in the following circumstances:
  • A verified prolonged service outage (exceeding 24 consecutive hours) attributable to WhoisJSON.
  • A billing error caused by our payment system.
  • Refunds will not be issued for account suspensions or bans resulting from violations of these Terms, including duplicate-account abuse.
  • Refunds will not be issued because you did not use your full monthly quota.

Refund requests must be submitted within 14 days of the charge to support@whoisjson.com.

8

Service Level & Availability

We target a 99.9% uptime for the WhoisJSON API, measured on a monthly basis. However, this is a target and not a guarantee. The Service may be unavailable due to:

  • Scheduled maintenance (we aim to provide advance notice when possible).
  • Unscheduled emergency maintenance to address security vulnerabilities or critical bugs.
  • Force-majeure events including, but not limited to, natural disasters, acts of war, government actions, network outages, or third-party service failures.
  • Changes to upstream WHOIS/RDAP registries, DNS resolvers, or certificate-authority systems that are outside our control.

We reserve the right to modify, suspend, or discontinue any feature, endpoint, or the entirety of the Service at any time with reasonable notice. Real-time API status is available on our API Status page.

9

Data Usage & Privacy

  • Account data: we collect your email address, hashed password, and payment information (processed and stored by Stripe/PayPal — we do not store card numbers).
  • Usage data: we log API requests (timestamps, endpoints, queried domains, response codes, IP addresses) to enforce rate limits, detect abuse, and improve service quality.
  • Analytics: we use Google Analytics to collect anonymized browsing data on the website.
  • We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with third parties for marketing purposes.
  • We may disclose your data if required by law, court order, or governmental regulation, or to protect the rights, safety, or property of WhoisJSON, its users, or the public.
  • You may request deletion of your account and associated data by contacting support@whoisjson.com. We will process such requests in accordance with applicable data-protection laws.
10

Termination & Suspension

10.1 — By WhoisJSON

We reserve the right to suspend or permanently terminate your account, API key, and access to the Service — immediately and without prior notice — if we reasonably believe that:

  • You have violated any provision of these Terms (including the duplicate-accounts and prohibited-conduct clauses).
  • Your use of the Service poses a security risk or threatens the stability of our infrastructure.
  • Your account is involved in fraudulent, abusive, or illegal activity.
  • You have failed to pay subscription fees when due.

In the event of a ban for Terms violations, no refund will be issued and any remaining subscription credit will be forfeited.

10.2 — By You

You may close your account at any time by contacting us or through your dashboard. Upon closure:

  • Your API key will be immediately revoked.
  • Any active subscription continues until the end of the current billing period.
  • We may retain anonymized usage logs for analytics and fraud-prevention purposes.
11

Limitation of Liability & Indemnification

11.1 — Disclaimer of Warranties

11.2 — Limitation of Liability

11.3 — Indemnification

You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless WhoisJSON and its officers, directors, employees, and agents from and against any and all claims, liabilities, damages, losses, costs, and expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising out of or related to:

  • Your use of the Service or data obtained through the API.
  • Your violation of these Terms.
  • Your violation of any applicable law or regulation.
  • Any claim by a third party resulting from your use of the Service.
12

General Provisions

12.1 — Governing Law & Jurisdiction

These Terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of France, without regard to its conflict-of-law provisions. Any disputes arising out of or in connection with these Terms shall be submitted to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Paris, France.

12.2 — Changes to Terms

We may update these Terms at any time. When we make material changes, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page and may notify you via email or a prominent notice on the website. Your continued use of the Service after such changes constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.

12.3 — Severability

If any provision of these Terms is found to be unenforceable or invalid by a court of competent jurisdiction, that provision shall be limited or eliminated to the minimum extent necessary, and the remaining provisions shall continue in full force and effect.

12.4 — Entire Agreement

These Terms, together with our Privacy Policy, constitute the entire agreement between you and WhoisJSON regarding the use of the Service and supersede any prior agreements, communications, or proposals.

12.5 — No Waiver

The failure of WhoisJSON to enforce any right or provision of these Terms shall not constitute a waiver of such right or provision. Any waiver must be in writing and signed by WhoisJSON.

12.6 — Assignment

You may not assign or transfer your rights or obligations under these Terms without our prior written consent. WhoisJSON may assign these Terms freely in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets.
